Western Isles

The Western Isles of Scotland have some of the best wave and wind resources in Northern Europe.

The extensive coastline and numerous potential landfalls provide enticing opportunities. The need for and ways of providing supporting infrastructure such as grid connections, supply bases and ports are now being fully assessed. There are major manufacturing facilities available at Arnish Point, mainly focused on the manufacture of large structures for the renewable energy sector, as well as significant port infrastructure at Stornoway harbour, which has huge potential for growth with its dedicated deepwater quay facilities, extensive lay-down area and excellent sea access. The islands are also forging ahead with hydrogen technology and have a number of wind energy schemes approved and in planning. A number of these are community owned.
