Shetland

Shetland, as the northernmost of the Scottish island groups, can rightly claim to be home to the strongest winds and largest waves in the UK.

There are also strong tidal flows through Yell Sound, Bluemull Sound and around certain headlands. Some early testing of tidal energy devices has taken place in Shetland including the Stingray device. Recent developments, such as planning approval of a large scale onshore wind farm project will also bring the Shetland interconnector link to the UK mainland electricity grid, necessary to export renewably produced electricity. There are other wave and tidal projects in the offing as well as developments to increase renewable energy capacity on the Shetland grid. Shetland has an excellent port infrastructure, a legacy of the rich fishing industry that flourishes in the islands as well as a prolific oil trade which has greatly benefited from recent infrastructure and investment.
