Keith has been involved in practical conservation for over 30 years. He graduated from Lancaster University in 1973 with a BSc (Hons) in Biological Sciences, specialising in Ecology.
After several years as a secondary school teacher, he joined the Reserves Division of the RSPB in 1978. He came to Orkney in 1984 as the RSPB Hoy warden and progressed to the position of Senior Site Manager, which involved overseeing the implementation of management plans for the 14 RSPB reserves in Orkney. Keith became Special Projects Manager before leaving the society in 2007, to become an independent ecological consultant.
